A year of insight and progress

2023 was a momentous year for PLOS. Launching Open Science Indicators gave us a new window into the behaviors and needs of our community in order to drive measurable impact in making research communication more open. We launched two new journals bringing diverse expertise together in order to share it with the widest possible audience, expanded options for preprints and data accessibility, and continued publishing invaluable research across the sciences.

In 2023 we published

articles with over 150,000 press mentions

by over 81,000 authors

in more than 180 countries

Explore some of our most popular articles and proudest moments from 2023.

January

Ensuring a timely and thorough exchange of knowledge is vital. That’s why we started off the new year by completing an integration of EarthArXiv, enabling pre-print publication at the time of submission for all of our environmental science journals.

February

The publishing process isn’t always as transparent and honest as we would all like. That’s why, in February, we introduced two new policies: one addressing manipulation of the publication process and the other outlining standards for professional conduct.

March

This month, we published results from our regional African workshops, identifying how Open Science awareness has increased on the continent and the steps that might be taken in implementing Open Science practices in African institutions.

Look back at how the COVID-19 pandemic offered up opportunities and created breakthroughs, learn about disruption for progress in Open Science, and find out how we can make scholarly publishing more equitable.

July

At PLOS, we work to foster Openness through policy, and by creating opportunities for researchers to engage in Open Science practices as part of their everyday experience publishing in our journals. We explore why quantifying Openness matters, and what it means for research communities.

August

As part of the fully OA group, PLOS was one of eight signatories on a letter sent to Congress, objecting to language in a subcommittee bill that would serve to block implementation of policies relating to open access research in the United States.

September

We hope the future enables researchers, organizations, and institutions to collaborate freely across both discipline and distance – and it turns out we’re not alone. We spoke to our community about collaboration, community, and the future of scholarly publishing.

We also caught up with the PLOS Computational Biology team to find out how mandated code-sharing can change peer review.

October

This month we celebrated two decades of Open life sciences research as PLOS Biology celebrated it’s 20th Birthday. Special articles and editorials published throughout the year to reflect on changes over the last 20 years, and to look at where the next 20 might take us.

November

Our new journals, PLOS Complex Systems and PLOS Mental Health, opened for submissions! Both journals will bring bring a range of research disciplines and expert perspectives together through broad scopes that facilitate information-sharing and cross-talk among stakeholders.
